In most cases, the opportunity to sign up for Medicare begins 3 months before you turn 65, includes your birth month and three months thereafter.
General Enrollment periods run January 1 through March 31 each year for those who didn’t sign up when they were first eligible or aren’t eligible for a special period. For those whose spouse is working or is covered by a group health plan you have a special enrollment period (SEP) to sign up. Additionally, upon termination of employment or when the insurance ends, you have 8 months to register.
Those who are under the age of 65, and newly eligible for Medicare related to a disability, may sign up for coverage to start beginning 24 months after receiving Social Security or RRB disability benefits. Eligible individuals may sign up during a 7 month period beginning 3 months before your 25th month of Social Security or RRB benefits.
